“Good tone comes from tweaking.” ~ Amptweaker

According to James Brown, “One of the coolest things the internet gave us is the ability to connect directly with each other through forums, emails, and social networking sites. But for some reason most large amplifier corporations continue to try to guess what consumers will buy or they simply use the internet to market their ideas to you. Instead of guessing what products might be successful, my plan is to get ideas directly from you. So if you put your pedal or amplifier ideas in my suggestion box, together we’ll change how products are developed.”

James Brown

James Brown is an amp design engineer and since 1986 he’s been designing guitar amps–first for Peavey® and then as Chief Engineer for Kustom® Amps. His specialty is tweaking. He’s been good at coming up with ideas, but his main contribution in every case was really fine-tuning the sound–especially how the amp or pedal distorts.

Modular Display Inc. is now an official distributor of Amptweaker products here in the Philippines. Feel excited as we introduce the new distortion pedals from Amptweaker!

PreSonus® was determined to deliver outstanding quality through innovative design with the advantage of the latest technology as PA speakers and studio monitors were added to its product lines. Presonus teamed up with Fulcrum Acoustic to be able to accomplish its determination.

(L to R) Fulcrum Acoustic's Dave Gunness with PreSonus' Jim Odom and Bob Tudor

Fulcrum Acoustic, founded in 2008 , is a professional loudspeaker manufacturer, known for its unique approach to high end loudspeaker design. It is well known for cutting-edge, high-end passive speaker systems with exceptional fidelity, including groundbreaking designs for coaxial speakers. Employing the research of company cofounder and Vice President of R&D David Gunness, Fulcrum Acoustic overcomes common loudspeaker performance limitations by integrating advanced DSP algorithms into its designs. The result is loudspeakers that provide stunning output and unmatched clarity, even at high SPLs, in the smallest enclosures possible.

Gunness,a former loudspeaker designer at Electro-Voice and Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW), holds patents on several inventions and has written numerous technology whitepapers, many of them published by the Audio Engineering Society. The KF900 large-scale sound-reinforcement system, the DSA digitally steered array, and a suite of innovative processing techniques marketed as Gunness Focusing™ are all the result of his career-long emphasis on improving loudspeaker performance with innovative signal processing algorithms.

Fulcrum Acoustic was made as the right partner for PreSonus’ Active Integration PA and studio-monitor speaker-development efforts. “Working with Dave Gunness and his team has been an honor and a pleasure,” remarks PreSonus Chief Technical Officer Bob Tudor. “The results of our collaboration are astounding, and this is just the beginning. It’s exciting for us to be able to combine Dave’s unique technology with our extreme DSP processing power in this new generation of products.”

The first results of the collaboration between PreSonus and Fulcrum Acoustic include the StudioLive™ AI-series PA speakers and Sceptre CoActual™-series studio reference monitors, which will be showcased at the 2013 Winter NAMM show. Both systems employ Fulcrum Acoustic’s acclaimed TQ™ Temporal Equalization technology powered by PreSonus’ next generation 32-bit, 96 kHz, dual-core-processor Active Integration technology.

“I can’t think of a better group of people to partner with than the folks at PreSonus,” says Gunness. “With visionary engineers like Jim Odom and Bob Tudor; a history of innovative products that integrate hardware and software; and successful partnerships with several high-tech companies, PreSonus is perfectly positioned to integrate our technology with theirs and to reach customers that we can serve more effectively together than we could by ourselves.”

The church finally got rid of their old analog mixer since it was no longer offering solutions to improve the sound. So they turned to a solution, which is a PreSonus SL24 digital mixer. ” Marami akong tinanong na nakaka intindi sa sound at hindi……napansin nilang lahat na gumanda na ang sound sa church, praise GOD” Pastor ED DAEZ, Dwelling Place Church, Quirino Hiway Nova.
The first thing we did was hook up the VSL with the mixer and run the SMAART RTA and tune the audio system based on the present room acoustics. Then eliminate unwanted frequencies which may cause feedback.

Installed on Wednesday night, Thusrday morning gig. The fastest way was to save all settings for the wednesday night practice, then recall scene early thursday morning. The technician was able to do what is told, and it worked! same with the Sunday service, simple recall. Every time they will stray away from the mix, all they need to do is recall the scene.

Modular Display INC. (Rental Division) is proud to announce that we have now acquired a full line speaker system from DAS audio and the FIRST in the Philippines. We now have a new set of DAS Aero active line arrays and subs in our arsenal. A total of 18 DAS aero 12A and 6 DAS aero 218A. Now, we are really excited to bring out the best sound for you. Here below is some information about DAS Aero.

“ Founded under the name Dynamic and Sound, D.A.S audio has evolved into an internationally recognized manufacturer of loud speaker systems, power amplification and related processing equipment designed for live events, installed sound and portable applications. D.A.S loud speaker components and compression drivers have earned an enviable reputation throughout the world for exceptional performance and reliability as a result of state-of-the-art transducer design. Every aspect of the company’s design/manufacturing processes is cutting edge, with products benefitting from the latest developments in computer aided design (CAD), solid-state modelling, and rapid prototyping. The result is a world class product line that a has made D.A.S. A leader in the professional community.

D.A.S. Professional systems can be found at many of the world’s most prestigious venue’s. Including Minsk Arena (Minsk, Belarus), The Twinkenham Stadium (London, England). Or the Maybee Center (Oklahoma,USA) to name a few.

The Aero 12A compact line array system joins the Aero Series2 family of professional sound touring products. The system incorporates an impressive battery of high tech features that take compact line array systems to an unprecedented level of performance.
The two-way amplifier design of the Aero 12A sets a new industry benchmark in audio performance, efficiency and power density. The 600 W amplifier provides extended bandwidth, improved dynamic range and exceptionally low distortion. Impressively compact in size and light in weight, its high power density of over 20 W per cubic inch promotes an amplifier design that requires much less space, reducing the overall cabinet size and in turn, the total cabinet weight-an important attribute for flown systems. Signal processing is accomplished by way of a powerful 24 bit DSP providing unparalleled control over critical signal parameters. Digital Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters are used in the signal processing of the Aero 12A.
The Aero 12A incorporates a D.A.S. 12LN4C, 12″ low frequency transducer employing a 75 mm (3″) voice coil and neodymium magnet motor assembly. High frequency reproduction relies on the exceptional characteristics of the new D.A.S. M-75N neodymium compression driver designed for use in applications where high SPL and low distortion are required. A pure titanium diaphragm featuring a 75 mm copper-clad, aluminium flat-wire voice coil yields high sensitivity, low distortion and extended frequency response.
The easily portable and rugged enclosure is manufactured using birch plywood and finished with a durable black paint. The captive rigging system splay angles range from 0º to 10º and can be adjusted in 0.5º increments from 0º to 3º and 1º increments from 3º to 10 º allowing a wide range of column curvatures to be accomplished.

August 2012, PALMM show Manila Philippines. The most awaited Pro audio and music expo in the country already closed it’s curtain for this year but it was a shining moment for PreSonus. Represented by its local distributor Modular Display INC, PreSonus especially the “StudioLive Digital Mixers” was able to establish it’s dominance over the competition in terms of quality, features, price and tech support.

The PreSonus booth was designed to accommodate bands, interested to try a live track recording and equipped as well as for Live FOH. Units visible and available for testing were the PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2, the 16.0.2, the 24.4.2, the Audiobox family, the HP4, the faderport and the rest of the preamp lines.

The major challenge was the new enforced rules of the PALMM show was to minimized sound level at all times on any activities. So we designed the Live-studio style set up, where all the bands were required to use the PreSonus HD7 studio headphone so they can clearly monitor their music, even if the guitar and bass amps are muted and all outs were by speaker emulation, no mics. The drums are also part of the design, that is why we used electronic drums but in order to compensate for the drums midi sound, we used the EZ drummer software bundled along with the Studio One Pro 2 DAW.

The bands were able to perform well and recorded very well just like in a recording studio. We got very minimal bleed since we used only 1 dynamic mic for vocal. After every band’s performance, we do a short playback and here is something what they needed to say:

“ The sound is so crystal clear, that I hear every mistake I make. There is no way I can I hide it..he he and that is good”

Abby Clutario
Vocals / Chapman Stick
Fuseboxx

“ The quality of life improves with PreSonus StudioLive. Whether Live or recording, its sou easy to use. Headroom is inherent to all models since they are quipped with the famous X-MAX preamps”.

Engr. Edgar David

Pro Sound Engineer

EMD Electronics

“ To PreSonus non-users, you don’t know what you’re missing. I pitty them”

Fil Ybanez

CEO-Sound Engineer

Ishow Cebu

Along with the live performace as the PreSonus booth was the “Digital Mixer….The Future is Now” audio seminar, which is co-organized by TGEEP, a non profit organization of Light and Sound industry players. The seminar was conducted by Mark Anthony Yulo of Audio Solutions, and was attended by existing PreSonus users who want to know more detailed feature and those who are from the analog set up who wants to go to digital.

PALMM has always been the right avenue in lauching new products but since we already launched PreSonus since 2010, we were excited to launch the new SMAART VSL and Just like the bundled VSL driver installer, the new SMAART VSL is for FREE. Now with SMAART VSL, you get free RTA and a Spectograph. Unlike other manufacturers where you pay for every upgrade, PreSonus makes sure you always get it for FREE and as they say “The best things in life are FREE.”

We can truly say that PreSonus was hit this PALMM 2012 Philippines. From booth design, technical set up, the demos, live recording, the seminar and it was made possible by TGEEP support and of course the support of PreSonus Audio Electronics of Baton Rouge, LA. And as a proof of success, all units of StudioLive were sold out in just one show and it is currently a record to break. Hope to see you all on PALMM 2013.

June 8, 2012, We are proud to announce that QDV music and Diliman Preparatory School officially lauched it newest after class program, “The Music Club”. QDV Music will be offering music courses like voice, guitar, piano, drums and music appreciation to pre-school, elementary and high school students of Diliman Preparatory school and also offered to non-students of DPS.

The music club will offer 32 sessions (1 hour per session) twice a week, after class. Shall be handled by dedicated and passion driven teaches like Ms. Rosdy Vidad, Joshua Dimaano and Dominique Obra.

Drum rooms and Piano rooms are currently under construction and each room is acoustically designed to meet the best sound and tone required by our standards.

Here below is the speech delivered by Miss Rosdy Vidal during the New student and parents orientation:

“Good morning to every one, I am Rosdy Hazel Vidad. I stand before you as an Administrator of Encore.

I remember when I was young; I got interested in playing a keyboard instrument. But since we were living in a small town in Palawan, and music is the least in my parents’ priority to invest on me, I didn’t have a chance to learn how to play it. Thankfully, I can carry a tune and follow the tempo. At least, if I can’t play… I still get a chance to perform and compete through singing.

I’m an education graduate and started teaching last 2001, and since I can sing, the school assigned me to teach music subject in elementary level. There I realized that teaching music is my passion. So by 2003, I enrolled myself in College of Music, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. I took up Music Education, Major in Voice, and Minor in Piano as a second degree while teaching at the same time.

Only then I started learning how to play the piano, read notes, and to sing with all the techniques I needed as a singer. I would like to believe that I am good, but I wonder how excellent would I be if I had been given a chance to nurture the gift that is in me.

You may be asking the same questions like my parents did…

Why do I have to send my child in a music school?

What would be the benefits?

Wouldn’t it be a waste of time and money for just a little fun in the end?

Allow me to share to you the four categories of benefits conveyed by studying music and musical instruments.

Success in Society

Perhaps the basic reason that every child must have an education in music is that music is a part of the fabric of our society. The intrinsic value of music for each individual is widely recognized in the many cultures and every human culture uses music to carry forward its ideas and ideals.

Let me cite to you what Michael Greene, Recording Academy President and CEO at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, last February 2000, he said;

“Music is a magical gift we must nourish and cultivate in our children, especially now as scientific evidence proves that an education in the arts makes better math and science students, enhances spatial intelligence in newborns, and let’s not forget that the arts are a compelling solution to teen violence, certainly not the cause of it!”

Success in society, of course, is predicated on success in school. Any music teacher or parent of a music student can call to mind anecdotes about effectiveness of music study in helping children become better students. Skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum.

Each of us wants our children; and the children of all those around us to achieve success in school, success in employment, and success in the social structures through which we move. But we also want our children to experience “success” on a broader scale. Participation in music, often as not based on grounding in music education during the formative school years, brings countless benefits to each individual throughout life. The benefits may be psychological or spiritual, and they may be physical as well:

“Studying music encourages self-discipline and diligence; traits that carry over into intellectual pursuits and that lead to effective study and work habits.

According to Bill Clinton, former President, United States of America

“Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and, by studying music in school, students have the opportunity to build on these skills, enrich their lives, and experience the world from a new perspective.”

Jef Raskin was one of the inventors who worked hand in hand with Steve Jobs in developing the Macintosh Computer.

He studied music as a child in the 50s… learned piano, played in his school bands. But he was also enthralled by technology and desired to find a way to use technology to aid his musical activities.

Before he passed away he wrote:

I’d been thinking of writing about the benefits that music has brought to the four children in our family. The results have been rewarding for each of them. But they are young, and it is hard to predict the role music will ultimately play in their lives. So I will write about what music has done for one person on a longer time scale, and thereby relate a bit of my own experience. For example, if I had not studied music, there would be no Macintosh computers today.

After going into great detail about his journey with music, from his youth, to his internship with an organ maker to his first notation programming to the invention of the Macintosh he concludes:

Not all children will find music as central to their lives as I do, but a good education demands exposure to the wide panoply of human achievement. The arts, the sciences, and the humanities must all be represented — and represented well and in a positive light — by teachers who love and live them. And it wouldn’t be bad to insist on learning a few technical skills as well. In my case, it was music and mathematics that struck a chord and took root. I would not have been able to accomplish what I have if my schools had not had active music programs and if my parents had not strongly supported (and enforced) my studies. Every child should have at least the same opportunity. Making music belongs in our homes and in our schools.

This is a powerfully written statement by a man who has had an indelible mark on mankind.

Jose Rizal is known for his excellence in fields such as science/medicine, literature, and art, among others. However, Rizal’s musical inclination is perhaps not known by many.

According to Mrs. Asuncion Bantug, Rizal’s grandniece, “among the arts, music was Rizal’s first love.” However, music did not come easily to him. His contemporary, Dr. Galicano Apacible, recalled that “He even found it hard to hum or whistle a simple melody. Whenever he did it, the melody turned out to be so out of tune.”

But determined to excel in music, Rizal studied how to play the flute and practiced hard. He also took up solfeggio, piano, and voice culture.

Rizal was not deemed as an excellent flutist or singer but he went on with his musical inclinations by composing his own songs. Most of the songs were his poems that were set to music. His popular novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo also contained several passages and references concerning music.

Among his known compositions are Kundiman ni Rizal, Alin Mang Lahi and Leonor.

What point am I driving at now?

Every child has a distinct gift, a passion, and a purpose.

You may want your child to become an engineer, a doctor, entrepreneur, among others…

But we shouldn’t neglect the foundation of music because it is where the creativity begins.

If a person possesses creativity, nothing will hinder him in solving the problems he will soon be facing in life.

To you Parents, who always have the best interest in your heart for your children, can give what your child really deserves.

In QDV Music, we are giving you the assurance that we will unleash your child’s potential, young as they are, through music.

Please remember that we do not teach music in order to create great musicians. We teach music to our students so they may become great people, regardless of their career path.

13 hours drive from Manila to Legaspi Albay City to witness the Magayon Festival, especially the “Mutya ng Magayon 2012”. It was exhausting but we were very excited since we know that The Mutya show is the main event of the month. I have seen the preparation for this event and it was no joke. They needed to rehearse everything from the contestants blocking, the performers, the light and sound the video etc. It was like preparing for the The Miss Universe show and the pressure was all there. The Mutya show was held at the Albay Astrodome which accomodates nearly 5,000 seats and throw in another thousand for those who are standing, another thousand were not able to watch the show since it was already above the capacity.

We at Modular Display Pro: Light and Sound and Audio Evolution (an Albay local supplier) prepared for this event. For the event, we brought in our old and reliable 8 units ODY-PRO line array, 4 units ODY PRO L8 dual 18 subs, a dozen QHA power amps, ODY PRO monitor, Bardl BR 103 wireless mics, a PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 digital mixer, a BDS dual DVD play back system, 8 x 13 LED wall, 32 units PAR 64, 24 units Matrix LED wash, 10 units Weinas Beam 200 and a Weinas RGB laser light.

The sound was loud, clear and an earth shaker and the audience was WOWed by the lightings. The lights definitely complemented the beauty contestants. Light and sound definitely gave justice to “Mutya ng Magayon 2012”. We hope to return next year for another spectacular show.
